HOUSTON – Included in Fox Sports’ four and a half hour pregame show leading up to Super Bowl LI in Houston on Sunday was a piece about Texas High School Football.
Fox Sports reporter Pam Oliver ventured out to get the story on the “obsession” with the Friday Night Lights in the Lone Star State.
“I think it is awesome that Texas High School Football was placed on that type of stage during the Super Bowl,” Splendora coach Marcus Schulz said. “It means a lot to see something that many of us coaches pour so much into on a daily basis being aired like that. The towns do shut down and the stands do get packed to see Friday Night Lights in Texas. No other profession or job like it anywhere.”
During the nearly four minute piece, multiple stadiums, teams and coaches were featured from the greater Houston area including New Caney ISD’s Texan Drive Stadium.
“It’s amazing to be a part of what is going on here at New Caney,” New Caney coach Brady Pennington said. “Texan Drive Stadium is certainly bringing an audience to our community and we are blessed to be able to play in such an amazing high school venue.”
The Woodlands High School pep rally, Lamar High School players and North Shore High School coach Jon Kay were also featured.
Kay, who was actually at Super Bowl Live at Discovery Green on Sunday, said he and his daughter were behind the set of Fox Sports when the feature aired. Once he showed up in this piece, Kay’s sister in Michigan texted him that she saw him on television. Initially, Kay thought his sister had seen him and his daughter but then his sister sent him a video of the spot.
The footage was originally filmed when North Shore played Dickinson in the playoffs, Kay said, and it was pretty cool to see it air during the Super Bowl.
“I don’t know if you could ask for a better stage for Texas High School Football than the Super Bowl pregame show,” he said. “I thought it was well done and a great spot!”
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, former Austin Westlake and current New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin, Texas coach Tom Herman and the voice of the Texas Longhorns and Texas High School Football State Championship games on Fox Sports Southwest Craig Way also gave their thoughts on Texas High School Football during the piece.
