The Kingwood Mustangs have made headlines in recent years for their success in track. In 2014, the boys from Kingwood HS won the 5A State Title in Track and Field. However, the boys are not the ones making headlines to start the 2015 season. The Mustang Girls Track team opened the season with a second place finish in the Zoe Simpson Invitational.
“We’re doing very well. A lot of girls from [last year’s] JV have really stepped up this year since we graduated a lot of seniors from last year’s team,” senior Emily Golla said.
In their next meet, The Sam Mosley Relays at Turner Stadium, the girls from Kingwood captured a first place win. The 1600 meter run has proven to be an event that the girls dominate in, helping Kingwood rack up points in every meet.
Coach Burleson and her girls took home their second, 2nd place finish at the Oak Ridge True Team Invitational. In the True Team Invitational, the girls got a glimpse of what they will be up against, having new district foes. Kingwood faces tough opponents this season in their new district, District 16-6A, opponents such as The Woodlands and Summer Creek.
“We can do well [in district]. We have to stay positive, have determination and keep a clear mind,” junior Mia Charles said.
Kingwood will try and continue their success on April 15-16 during the Girls 16-6A District Meet at Turner Stadium. “Everybody needs to be willing to improve in order for us to succeed as a team,” senior Inne Cheetham-West said.
