A cool spring afternoon and the sound of shuffling metal cleats across the dugout mean another day of baseball for Kerry Cox. Cox is the head baseball coach of the Pearland Dawson Eagles and lifelong student of the game. He is a native Houstonian and a North Shore High School graduate. He continued his passion for baseball while attending San Jacinto College in Southeast Houston and then transferred to Mary Hardin Baylor in Belton. After graduating college, Coach Cox naturally transitioned into coaching, beginning his career Belton High school. After the year at Belton, Coach Cox moved back to Houston to take a job at Channelview High School. He was blessed with three boys Daniel, Jared, and Cody. If you guessed they would be ballplayers then you may be following along. All three boys played ball for their father at Channelview and continued to excel. Coach Cox later accepted his most recent position as the head coach for the Dawson Eagles, where he has stayed for the past eight years. His two oldest boys have taken to coaching and molding young men while following in their father’s footsteps. Jared is now the junior varsity coach at Dawson, and his brother Daniel comes in from time to time to work as a hitting instructor. The Dawson Eagles have a rare camaraderie that is seldom experienced in high school sports, and I am grateful to have experienced this truly unique family atmosphere.
