A Run With The Mavericks

A windy Tuesday afternoon at the home for Manvel baseball stood a smiling Kelly Kerlin. His Mavericks were busy at work practicing and taking cuts before a non-conference game against Dobie High School. The scrappy Mavericks hustle around the diamond after every ball, working on fundamentals and rising to challenges. Led by a healthy class of seniors and juniors, Coach Kerlin has turned this squad into contenders! Kerlin is helped on the diamond by Dewan Edmonson, his assistant coach. Edmonson, or Coach Ed, as his players call him, works very hard on shaping young boys into men. Coach Ed grew up in Sugarland behind the Imperial Sugar Factory.

He played baseball throughout the area from Sugarland Little League all the way to Lee College in Baytown. Coach Ed then began working with juveniles in the court systems and found that his passion was helping young boys transform into young men. This changed him and with the persuading of his wife laGenia he became a baseball coach. This led him to coach Kerlin and to the fine young men at Manvel High School. Such kids as Donovan Lewis the hard throwing right hander who plays third base and swings a heavy stick and Levi Dixon the junior prospect who plays shortstop. The Manvel Mavericks are gearing up for a great run in 2015 and with Coach Kerlin and Coach Ed mentoring these ball players, the sky is the limit.
